Eugènie Herlaar.

Before staring my residency, I happened to learn about Eugènie Herlaar.

She was a television presenter, born on Curaçao (November 10, 1939) — which is where I was also born. This connection between us fascinates me endlessly, especially because she was the first female news presenter of the NTS Journaal, which is the predecessor to NOS Journaal. What I found interesting is that she got her job by writing to the NTS, asking why there were no female news presenters. The response she received was that there was indeed a wish for a good woman’s voice, but that they hadn’t been presented with one so far — after which they invited here to come do a speaking test. She was active between the years of 1965 - 1976.

She recently passed away on August 14, 2024 in Alkmaar, The Netherlands. I would have loved to have interviewed her for my residency, also since Sound & Vision has all the NTS & NOS Journaal archives.

Here is a clip I found of Eugenie Herlaar on YouTube (starts at 3:07). Her voice is incredible and I am particularly interested in her vocal tone and intonation. I found out that she also worked as a speech therapist.

In the public search archive of Sound & Vision, I found 165 results. I wonder how many hits I will get when searching in DAAN — which I am not connected to yet at this time. Here are some other materials I found of her so far which I particularly loved. I’m very intrigued by her hairstyles and her appetite for clothing with patterns. I’m also thinking about the background of the NOS newsroom in the 1975 photographs.
