Information

Tarona (b. 1985, Curaçao) is a visual artist and director working across film, photography and research. In her work, she examines how memory and knowledge are maintained and shared within the Black Diaspora. She investigates how this knowledge moves through gestures, places, times, and materials, rather than being fixed in language or narrative alone. She works across two registers: guided as much by intuition as by rigorous research, with feeling as a key part of her method.

Time Travelers’ Device

I’m currently working on a script to set up the baseline for the visual mixtape I’m going to make. I’m thinking a lot about how the film should be introduced by a newsanchor, with an item about how a device was found from which material was extracted. That extracted material is then the material I found in the archives at Beeld & Geluid and how I interconnect them through the theme of transmission. I still have so many notes to process from the time that has passed, which I will do, but wanted to make this entry now so my research I did digitally doesn’t get lost.

Time travel is a big aspect of the storyline, and how the narrative will get started of the film. Within this I am also thinking about a device that holds 36 petabytes of information (a direct reference to the size of the archive at Beeld & Geluid), that is both able to record still image, moving image (video / film), sound and that can also transmit / broadcast what it has recorded. I have no idea what such device looks like and may have to ask someone to design something like this for the purpose of the film. Maybe, even, get it 3D printed as a prototype? Might be interesting.

Sidenote: If Teenage Engineering is ever handing out a sponsorship deal, I’ve been eyeing the TP-7 for a minute now. Do you think a time traveler would pay €1499 for a device that only records sound? Where would time travelers even buy a device to do all the abovementioned things and how much would it cost? Would it even be for sale? Where would they go to obtain such a device? And when would they go? Is it gifted to them at time of initiation?

Connective material below. Some contain AI generated images, which I did not generate myself but found across the internet. Also, when I explained this idea to folks, the word ‘Afro Futuristic’ kept popping up in the context of the story I was telling. We’ll see.

Food for thought for the worldbuilding.
