Information

Tarona (b. 1985, Curaçao) is a visual artist and director working across film, photography and research. In her work, she examines how memory and knowledge are maintained and shared within the Black Diaspora. She investigates how this knowledge moves through gestures, places, times, and materials, rather than being fixed in language or narrative alone. She works across two registers: guided as much by intuition as by rigorous research, with feeling as a key part of her method.

Process Notes

I’m in the middle of editing the work (actually, what counts as the middle? I might be at the beginning or the end). Here are some things that went through my mind this morning and wanted to write them down before going back into the edit again today.

- Mud. Material feels like mud. Organising the material then becomes something solid, like concrete. The better I know my material, the faster connections I can make. A lot of my time has gone into organising and indexing the material + getting to ‘know’ it.

- Detach from the outcome. Focus on the process
- Put all the findings you wrote down into the work in some way. (Structure / Links)
- I’m navigating the space that sits in between my intuition and my intellect.
- “Working between two registers.” - Delany Boutkan (when describing my process)
- The denser I want the work to be, the more material I need.
- To be able to answer certain questions, do I need to write the backstory for the time traveler?
- Who / what is the main protagonist of this story? Can an object be a protagonist?
- Only the material remains.
- The process as / is the work.

A final note.
There is this constant urgent feeling like I still want to see more + collect more because I know my time is finite within the movement of the Sound & Vision archives and I will no longer be able to view things after my residency*, which gives me such a feeling of sadness. My access is only temporary. When thinking about the framework of decoloniality that Sounds Familiar sit in, why not grant me access in perpetuity? Because, does this means that the ‘intervention’ is only temporary? Is this what privilege feels like on a deeper level? The constant awareness of access, especially the awareness of the loss of that access. And also, how much do we actually change when only temporary interventions take place? How does this change its consistent structure?

*(Need to check with archive what will happen after my residency ends - can I still access the network?

“The first known mechanical computer in history was not an instrument for making predictions, but rather a pedagogical mechanism used by a philosopher in his teachings”

“It was certainly an astronomical mechanism, but also an astrological mechanism, because by predicting the future, especially eclipses, knowledge was linked to power.”

“The oldest known mechanical computer remained almost 2,000 years at the bottom of the sea, near the Greek island of Antiquitera, and although it has long since ceased to function, being fragmented and its gears corroded, it still retains part of its original information.”
