Information

Tarona (b. 1985, Curaçao) is a visual artist and director working across film, photography and research. In her work, she examines how memory and knowledge are maintained and shared within the Black Diaspora. She investigates how this knowledge moves through gestures, places, times, and materials, rather than being fixed in language or narrative alone. She works across two registers: guided as much by intuition as by rigorous research, with feeling as a key part of her method.

Synopsis / Outline

It’s about time to start really dig into the structure for the film I want to make, so it’s important to write an synopsis / outline in order to set its precedent. Below my notes!

Synopsis
Breaking news: an object has been unearthed on the island of Curaçao, as a new hotel was being built by Dutch investors on the furthest end of the island. Operations have seized since the findings, and archeologists have been called in to identify the buried finding as well as leading scientists. They have identified it as a device that has no storage limit — which is able to travel through time and space, and record material through all set dimensions and timelines. 63 petabytes have been extracted from the device so far, with data facilities being built in order to facilitate the devices extraction. However, only a small percentage has been able to be decoded so far, as most technologic advances seem to have not been developed yet in order to read its data and contents. This extracted material has been dubbed lovingly by the public - and will be known in the history books as - the “Time Traveler Tetra Vision”.

Outline
- Opening sequence of breaking news, with newsanchor (referencing Eugènie Herlaar)
-  The found object is being shown  on the newsitem
- Viewing of material starts -> Runtime TBD.
- Ending of news item, with closing words?
- Glitch of Eugènies Herlaar audition during closing words of anchor as ‘interference’.
- Credits

Additional note
I think what is important  in building the newsitem that it is unclear from what time period this newsitem is being broadcast. Time should not be mentioned throughout the text of the newsreader or  anywhere else, except in the ‘material’ itself, but not as a means to determine time.  There should be no mention of day or night, nor year nor hours should be mentioned. This  removes any sense of time and thus any sense of linear chronological movement for the work.

Connective material

BLKNWS by Kahlil Joseph at Venice Biennale (Giardinni), 2019
“An anchoring project of curator Ralph Rugoff’s Venice Biennale, Kahlil Joseph’s BLKNWS broke new artistic ground while redefining the genre of the news broadcast. The project consists of a continuously updated newscast in the form of a two-channel video that splices historical and contemporary found footage with newly shot scenes of news room and documentary reportage. Each broadcast is shown on two closely hung screens that play simultaneous footage meant to inflect and inform each other in a continuous dialog. Through his distinctive use of juxtaposition and montage, Joseph’s BLKNWS seeks to generate a plurality of editorial voices that approach reportage through a distinctly black lens. The result is a positively pitched new broadcast in the form of a visual art experience that delivers strangely truthful, original, and hyper contemporary insights into the human condition.”
